Councillor Amanda Hopgood has officially commenced her term as the Mayor of Durham for the 2026 to 2027 civic year, marking a new chapter in a local government career that spans more than two decades.
Hopgood, who previously made history as the first woman to serve as the leader of the Durham County Council from 2021 to 2025, was formally appointed to the ceremonial role by the city’s charter trustees. She has continuously represented the Newton Hall area since the formation of the unitary authority in 2009 and served as a parish and district councillor prior to that.
During her mayoral tenure, Hopgood has pledged to utilize her platform to support community development and charitable initiatives. She announced that her official fundraising efforts will be directed toward two primary organizations: Point North, a charity dedicated to combating local poverty and enriching residents’ lives, and the Durham-based St Cuthbert’s Hospice.
“I am extremely honoured to become the Mayor of Durham,” Councillor Hopgood stated following the Mayor Making ceremony. “It is an amazing privilege to serve as Mayor of my home city. I’m looking forward to working with many organisations and groups over the coming year, meeting our amazing residents, visitors and businesses as well as raising funds for my chosen charities to help them continue their vital work.”
Born and raised in Durham City, Hopgood spent more than 20 years working as a mortgage advisor for the Halifax bank before transitioning to a full-time career in local government in 2008.

Throughout her term, the new Mayor will be supported in her civic duties by her husband of 33 years, Neil Hopgood. Councillor Eric Mavin has been appointed to serve concurrently as the Deputy Mayor for the 2026-2027 period. The mayoral role involves presiding over civic functions, promoting the city’s historical traditions, and acting as an ambassador for the local populace.
