“A Serious Violation”: Starmer Condemns Russian Drone Strike on Romanian Apartment Building

Prime Minister Keir Starmer has sharply condemned a Russian drone strike that entered Romanian airspace and hit a residential apartment building, warning that Moscow’s actions threaten the security of the entire NATO alliance.

The incident unfolded overnight in the Romanian city of Galați near the Ukrainian border after what Romanian authorities identified as a Russian drone crossed into NATO territory during a wider wave of attacks targeting Ukraine. The drone later crashed into a ten-storey residential building, injuring civilians and sparking a rooftop fire.

In an official statement released by Downing Street, Starmer described the incident as “a serious violation of NATO airspace” and said Britain stood “shoulder to shoulder with Ukraine, with Romania, and with all our NATO allies in the face of continued Russian aggression.”

Romania’s Defence Ministry said radar systems tracked the drone as it entered Romanian airspace during an overnight Russian assault on nearby Ukrainian infrastructure along the Danube region. Two Romanian F-16 fighter jets and a military helicopter were scrambled, though the drone struck the building before it could be intercepted.

Officials confirmed that at least two civilians suffered injuries, including a woman and a child, while dozens of residents were evacuated from the damaged apartment block.

The strike has triggered alarm across Europe because it marks one of the most serious incidents yet involving Russian military equipment directly impacting NATO territory since the Ukraine war began in 2022.

NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte condemned what he called Russia’s “reckless behaviour” and reiterated that the alliance remains prepared to defend “every inch” of allied territory.

Romanian officials have reportedly begun discussing the possibility of invoking NATO Article 4 consultations, a mechanism used when a member state believes its territorial integrity or security is under threat.

The Kremlin has so far denied responsibility for deliberately targeting Romania, with Russian officials suggesting the drone may have gone off course during attacks aimed at Ukrainian infrastructure.

However, Romanian authorities insist that radar tracking confirmed the aircraft entered Romanian airspace before impact.

The incident has rapidly intensified fears that the Ukraine conflict could spill further into neighbouring NATO countries.

Across social media, discussions exploded throughout Friday morning as footage of the damaged apartment block circulated widely on X, Facebook, and Reddit.

Many users described the strike as a dangerous escalation and questioned how NATO should respond if similar incidents continue. Others warned against rushing toward direct military confrontation with Russia.

The attack also reignited wider debate about Europe’s military preparedness and the vulnerability of NATO border states to drone warfare.

Romania has experienced multiple incidents involving Russian drone debris entering its territory over the past two years, though previous cases caused little or no civilian injury. This latest strike is being viewed as a significant escalation because civilians inside a NATO member state were directly harmed.

European leaders, including European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, also condemned the incident, with several officials warning that Russia had “crossed another line” in the conflict.
