Greater Manchester Police (GMP) have recovered an alarming cache of deadly firearms, including an MP5 sub-machine gun, during an ongoing initiative designed to disrupt violent crime and organized criminal networks in the region.
The significant discovery was made on Friday, June 12, 2026, in the Brinnington area of Stockport. Officers located the MP5 sub-machine gun alongside a Grand Power pistol and a quantity of live ammunition. Shockingly, authorities reported that the high-calibre ordnance had been concealed within simple rubbish bags, heightening concerns among local residents regarding the proximity of military-grade weapons in their community.
The seizure is a direct result of the Stockport Challenger Team’s ongoing neighborhood intensification operations, which involve ramped-up searches and targeted policing to dismantle local drug-dealing and antisocial behavior networks. Detectives currently theorize that the weapons were hastily discarded by individuals reacting to the increased police presence and the imminent threat of raids.
Detective Inspector Mark Graham, who leads the Stockport Challenger Team, highlighted the severity of the find and its implications for public safety.
“Friday’s discovery has prevented potentially serious harm to those who work and live in the area; these types of weapons have no place on our streets and are incredibly powerful and dangerous,” Inspector Graham stated. “Our investigation is progressing, and we are following numerous lines of enquiry in relation to who these belong to and how they ended up where they did.”
Graham also contextualized the broader success of the regional initiative, confirming that between April 2024 and April 2026, GMP successfully removed 150 firearms from the streets of Greater Manchester. While no arrests have been made directly in connection with the Brinnington firearms discovery at this stage, forensic assessments of the weapons are currently underway. Authorities are heavily relying on ballistic analysis and digital forensics to trace the origins of the firearms and identify the criminal enterprise responsible for their possession.
