Several aviation employees sustained injuries on Thursday after the nose landing gear of a Lufthansa Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner collapsed abruptly while parked at Frankfurt Airport. The aircraft was positioned at Gate A15 in Terminal 1, undergoing final preparations for flight LH450 to Los Angeles.
The incident occurred at approximately 12:45 PM local time. Security footage from the airport apron showed the front of the widebody jet dropping suddenly onto the tarmac as the nose gear retracted unexpectedly. Multiple ground service vehicles were attached to the aircraft at the time of the sudden structural failure.
Lufthansa confirmed that boarding had not yet commenced, and no passengers were on board the aircraft. However, cabin crew members and ground handling staff were actively conducting pre-flight operations inside and around the jet. The airline reported that several employees sustained injuries during the violent drop and were subsequently transported to receive immediate medical treatment. The scheduled flight to Los Angeles was immediately canceled.

The aircraft involved, registered as D-ABPQ and named “Herne,” is one of the newest additions to the Lufthansa fleet. Aviation data confirms the jet was delivered to the German carrier earlier in 2026. The sudden collapse of a landing gear system on a stationary, modern aircraft is considered highly irregular within standard aviation safety parameters.
Lufthansa issued a formal statement confirming full cooperation with relevant aviation authorities to investigate the precise circumstances of the mishap. Technical teams will comprehensively analyze the aircraft’s maintenance logs, digital system records, and the physical mechanisms of the landing gear strut to determine whether the collapse resulted from a mechanical defect, maintenance error, or an isolated operational failure.
Boeing representatives acknowledged the incident and confirmed the manufacturer is providing technical support to Lufthansa during the ongoing investigation. The incident shares similarities with a 2021 occurrence at London Heathrow, where a British Airways Boeing 787 suffered a nose gear collapse due to a locking pin being inserted incorrectly during maintenance. Investigators in Frankfurt will determine if a similar procedural error occurred.
